Google 4 Doodlehttp://www.google.com/doodle4google/

Today I did a lesson on creative writing using the book Squiggle. To tie in technology I introduced the contest DOODLE 4 GOOGLE. The students are very excited about this. Below is a link to the information. The winners will receieve a 30,000 scholarship to the college of their choice and a trip to NYC. We will be allowing class time for this project during the Daily 5. Good Luck!

Teaching Writing!

Dear Parents,
Now that the FCAT Writes is behind us I wanted to share just a few things with you. When the children come to me in the Fall I often cringe at the first essays. It can be a daunting task to get them to the level they need to be to take the test in just a few months. Here's the part you probably don't know. It is really one of my favorite subjects to teach because I can see their writing change before my very eyes. Week after week I sit down on the weekends to read what has been poured out on paper the week before. I often make my family down to listen to something funny or touching that a student has written. They often run when they see my stack of papers come out now.
I'm blessed to see into the minds of your children though their writing. I celebrate when I see them take what Mrs. Whitner and I have taught in class and use those skills in their writing.
Today you would have been so proud of them with their pencils flying and the effort that was going into every sentence. You see for me, your children by now have become my children. I love them, I celebrate with them, my heart breaks with them. I felt like the proud mom of each and every one of them today.
My heart overflows with thanks for all the support you have given your children. At this age it can be a life long lesson that hard work can transform something that seemed so difficult in the beginning into a feeling of success. Thank you again for making my job what it is.

Take a moment to watch the videos I posted!

Pen Pal Letters Arrived

We Love Our Pen Pals!

Oreo Cookie Phases of the Moon

We learned about the Phases of the Moon this week in SCIENCE. I just LOVE teaching science and especially when we can tie food in. Oreos are my favorite! Please watch the video of our kids enjoying our experience and inquiry in class.

The Shark Tracker Project

This week we learned about a new app "The Shark Tracker." Mrs. Robb came in as a guest speaker to introduce the shark tracker app to our students. We even measured how long an actually great white was that was spotted in Jacksonville just last month. Students laid out yard sticks so they could see how big Maryjane really is.
This coming week students will be assigned a shark somewhere on our earth. Students will research their shark and do a report. They will also be required to track their shark each week and plot where they are on a map.
We even decided to take it a step further by contacting the founders of The Shark Tracker Project to find out if they would do a live web quest with us. We have our fingers crossed and students will be writing persuasive essays to send off to follow up my email.
We're also hoping to bring in FIT as guest speakers on sharks. While we wait for our experts to get back to us we will be researching in our Shark Teams.

Below is the link if you would like to check it out.
Enjoy!

Fort Christmas Trip

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 06:16 PM PST
A few candids from our day at Ft. Christmas State Park in East Orange County. Two days each year Florida history comes alive ... We were there!
Thanks to all the great parents who were good sports and helped us with everything. I am so proud of our students too and their patience with our slow start and long trip. I'll be sharing more photos at school in a little slide show!
